Abstract

The increasing number of the elderly in the future will inevitably affect the public health service system. The objective of this Cross-sectional Survey Research was to compare the quality of life of the elderly who were denture wearers and non-denture wearers in Ang Thong Province and study the factors that influenced and predicted the quality of life in both groups. Data collection was carried out from April 2008 to June 2008 by using a simple random sampling method in which 400 subjects of elderly, both denture wearers and non-denture wearers, were randomly selected to participate in the study. All participants who were denture wearers had participated in the Royally granted denture project from the year 2005-2007 in Ang Thong Province and all non-denture wearers were local seniors. A questionnaire developed by researchers, consists of participants’ general character, feelings about their oral health, attitude towards denture wearing, social support and the quality of life of the elderly. The data were analyzed by using percentile statistics, t-test, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and Stepwise Multiple Regression.

The results were that 2/3 of the elderly in both groups (denture wearers and non-denture wearers) had high quality of life score (63.0% and 67.0%, respectively) and the elderly who were denture wearers and non-denture wearers in Ang Thong Province had no statistically significant difference in their quality of life (p > 0.05). Predisposing and reinforcing factors that influenced their quality of life in both groups were attitude about denture wearing, social support and feeling about their oral health with a statistically significant difference reported (p < 0.05). These factors could help to predict the quality of life for 36%.

The results of the study suggested that family and the associated authorities should show the campaign that support a good attitude about denture wearing and having criteria for increasing the elderly people to participate in the Royally granted denture project to improve their good quality of life.
